A perfect storm marketing opportunity (for ADWs)

The Rainbow 6 carryover for Friday, April 1 is a robust $789,100.25--not bad for a dime wager.
The Rainbow 6 has rolled for quite some time thanks to a provision that only sees the jackpot paid to one unique winner. The exception on that provision is closing day of the meet when there can be no carryovers and thus all pools get paid out.
Beulah Park used that to its advantage last year with its Fortune 6, a similar bet to the Rainbow 6 but with a base wager of $.25. The bet carried to closing day, which happened to be Kentucky Derby day, and generated record handle of $1,143,114 chasing a $445,000 carryover. I bought into the wager with some friends, and we split one of the winning tickets worth $3,750 each.
Given its bigger carryover and smaller base wager, the Rainbow 6 could offer a similar bonanza on closing day. Given a conservative estimate of a carryover growth of 5%-6% each day, the carryover could easily hit $2-million if it continues for the next 17 days before closing day.
Knowing that $2-million would have to be paid out on a dime wager would create a betting frenzy rarely seen outside the three- or four-day pick six carryovers in California or big race days such as Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup.
Ah... but there is a catch (isn't there always in racing?). Closing day at Gulfstream, featuring a possible $2-million must-win Rainbow 6 for a dime is April 24.
Also known as Easter Sunday.
Keeneland, wagering shops in New York (including NYRA tracks), and countless other brick and mortar facilities throughout the country will be CLOSED. If you do not have an active advance-deposit wagering account locked and loaded ahead of April 24, then you will have no way to chase what is certain to be an extremely overlaid payoff. Six even money shots could win, and this thing would still pay $500 for a dime.
So I'm anxious to see if account wagering sites such as TwinSpires.com, XpressBet.com, and TVG market this opportunity. There will be many people looking to bet into this pool--Beulah did $1.1-million+ on Derby day, for crying out loud--and the only way some of them will be able to do it is through an account wagering platform. Will racing be ready to let them know that?

1 soothsayers:

  1. This is a good point. I do believe that a few of the ADW's don't take this wager as they have a different tote provider and they can't facilitate wagers of the $0.10 pick 6 variety. I know TVG doesn't carry this wager, Xpressbet must and likely that twinspires probably will.
    Further limiting.
