Trivia contest: Name the top 25 races by handle in 2009

In discussing the future of Thoroughbred racing, Churchill Downs Inc. President Bob Evans said that one of the reasons he is optimistic is because there has remained an interest in quality races.

To illustrate that point, he said that handle on the top 25 races (by handle) in 2009 increased 18% versus the top 25 races in 2003. Total handle during that period had declined 19%.

Name the top 25 races by handle. The first to do so correctly in the comments section below will win a Zenyatta publications package Thoroughbred Times (special edition plus other back issues featuring The Queen).

  2. Sorry Ed -
I missed the symposium feed. But this was a strong statement by Mr. Evans:

“It’s a mistake to use gaming profits to subsidize racing operations,” Evans said. “Tracks do it, and I think that’s a mistake.

Consolidation is but one avenue, however horse racing needs to create a higher segment of winning players.

That in addition to newbies who last longer with their leisure dollars, educating themselves in the process enough for them to attempt again later in life.

  6. The 14 Breeders' Cup races, three Triple Crown races, and Kentucky Oaks are all correct, it's the other seven that people are tripping up on.

A hint: The other seven all occur on Saturdays.

Still, it's interesting that seven of the 25 races (6 BC + Oaks) occur on Friday.
