She put $900 on the fifth horse in the sixth race

The most disappointing thing about my favorite band (aka The Hold Steady) writing a song about a clairvoyant who uses her powers to pick the ponies is that the video doesn't involve any scenes from the racetrack, but still, it's pretty cool that two of my passions intersected like this.

"Chips Ahoy" was a bonus for me because even though the song appears on the band's third album, it was actually the last album I ended up discovering by them, so I went a whole three albums without knowing that my favorite band did a song that involves my favorite sport, pastime, etc.

I'm seeing The Hold Steady live for the first time on Wednesday night in Columbus, and the band just announced on Tuesday that they've scheduled a Lexington show on September 29. I'm expecting great things, so we'll see.

As for any "real" horse named Chips Ahoy, the Jockey Club reports that he was a 1975 model by Never Bend inbred 3x3 to Nearco. He won four of 33 races and had a minor stud career with 46 foals from seven crops of racing age that include 1 stakes winner from 32 winners among 38 starters. The Jockey Club typically frowns on naming horses after trademarks, so it's doubtful we'll ever see a Chips Ahoy again.

1 soothsayers:

  1. Definitely in need of some racetrack footage.

And is the ending an homage to a Monty Python episode? The one in which all the Pythons, dressed identically as Alan Whicker-lookalike interviewers, alternate passing from stage-left and stage-right as they finish each other's sentences?

Regardless, I think I have a new favorite horseplayer.
