Nicky Boy could be spokesfilly for cookies if she wins a championship

As of early Wednesday afternoon Solange Chadda had not decided which race she would start Nicky Boy in on Saturday because she was still relishing the idea that her three-year-old Anziyan Royalty filly would finally run at all.

Chadda tried unsuccessfully to run the maiden filly against males in any of the Wood Memorial Stakes, Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, or Arkansas Derby with the New York Racing Association, Keeneland Association, and Oaklawn Park, respectively, each refusing her entry.

But Calder Race Course on Monday accepted Chadda's cross entries of Nicky Boy in both the Azalea Stakes against fellow three-year-olds and the Princess Rooney Handicap against older foes during the Summit of Speed program this Saturday.

Nicky Boy has finished last in both her starts, a maiden special weight against fillies on February 5 and the Borderland Derby against males on February 27. Both races were at Sunland Park with Jeff Mullins listed as the trainer of record for the debut and Arnulfo Ascencio listed for her second start.

Ascencio, a 16% trainer in 2009, had worked Nicky Boy on March 22 at Sunland and was to be the trainer of record had the filly been allowed to enter any of the aforementioned Grade 1 races, but Jesse Maldonado is listed as the trainer for the Summit of Speed. Maldonado has won 18 of 220 starts lifetime, but he is winless in 46 starts dating back to 2002.

Nicky Boy has not recorded a published workout since March 22, but Chadda said she has been training marvelously with Maldonado in New Mexico.

"She's a different horse now," Chadda said of the filly's growth since her last start. "She's taller; she has a big butt; she's like Popeye. You would think she's a four- or five-year-old. She's ready, and the six-furlong distance is perfect for her."

Calling the six-furlong distance "perfect" is a bit of a departure from claiming the filly could win the Triple Crown, but even if that goal is now unattainable, Chadda still has a championship in her sights for her filly because an Eclipse Award would mean an endorsement deal.

Chadda said that Nicky Boy's diet includes red wine, beer, and a very famous brand of cookie that she declined to name but said that the cookie's manufacturers told her that if Nicky Boy wins a championship that the filly could be the cookie's spokeshorse.

"The people at the [cookie] company are all going to bet her," said Chadda, who made millions selling her bicycle shorts design to plus-sized women's clothing retailer Lane Bryant.

Nicky Boy was 71.10-to-1 in the Borderland Derby, and it is difficult to envision her being any less than that regardless of what race she runs in Saturday.

  2. This lady is nuts and her poor horse, if it is sound yet,is paying a big price for it. She came up lame IE: shin bucked and a partially bowed tendon after her last race because she was not properly trained. The horse has heart and is not responsible for her basket case owners decisions, word to the wise. Make sure you get your money from her. I was this horses groom and still havent been payed.
