O-man that would have been cool ...

I expected to be on a boat ride crusing the fjords of Oman as we speak, but instead I am sitting in my hotel room getting ready to go for a jog in the afternoon heat.

Nothing is ever easy.

We got back to Emirates Towers last night at 3 a.m. after the Elton John/Santana concert, which was tremendous by the way, and I still had some work to get done in order to leave for Oman by 9:30 a.m.

After a 22-hour day, however, I though I would get a quick 90 minutes or so of sleep before finishing my magazine story on the race and then heading out for the Omani peninsula. So at about 4:15 a.m., I called down and got a wake up call for 6 a.m., which would have given me plenty of time to finish, shower, and get on the road.

Instead, I awoke around 8:40 to a sliver of sunlight peeking through the drapes.

No wake up call.

I probably could have still gone and tried to finish up late tonight when I got back, but the pressure I would have put on myself to hurry and finish as well as make sure the quality was what I expected of myself would have been too great.

Plus, had we had a problem and arrived back in Dubai late, I might have missed the deadline. It just wasn't worth it.

So now it's off to Plan B, which isn't as cool as Plan A but, if you can't have a good time in a foreign country halfway around the globe, you shouldn't be there in the first place.

The itinerary through tomorrow evening, when I board a plane to return to the states and see my two boys for the first time in a week, will include swimming, jogging, a few more blog posts about my final thoughts on the World Cup and Meydan, shisha and dinner with friends, some beach time, some writing of postcards, some reading (Under the Dome by Stephen King started off slow but has totally grown on me and I recommend it to King fans), and, last but not least ... SLEEP!

I did some cipherin' a few minutes ago and determined that since Tuesday night I have had a grand total of 14 hours of sleep.

Would have been great to see you Oman. Maybe next time.
