Dubai-bye

This blog launched a little less than 11 months ago with the idea that any day at the races could be a big event.

You just never know when a Horse of the Year might show up in a listed stake. Well, I guess you do know because they take entries days before the actual race, but I digress.

The Derby trail is littered with big events, and for Turf writers, dissecting the minutia of what it all means is as big an event as the races themselves sometimes.

One of the top Kentucky Derby preps this coming weekend is the U.A.E. Derby at Meydan. Even if the race has never produced a winner, it's significant in that the first- and second-place finishers will easily have enough graded stakes earnings to make the gate on May 1 in Louisville (assuming they're Northern Hemisphere 3YOs, nominated to the Triple Crown, and all that).

The March 27 Meydan card also features Presious Passion in the $5-million Dubai Sheema Classic and dual champion Gio Ponti in the $10-million Dubai World Cup.

On the ground for Thoroughbred Times is Deputy News Editor Steve Bailey, who will be contributing to this blog both news and commentary items about the Big Event—the races, the pageantry, and the grandeur of Meydan Racecourse.

Here is a picture of Steve and I covering the 2004 Kentucky Derby alongside former co-worker Alicia Wincze, who now plies her trade with the Lexington Herald-Leader. Thanks to Z photos for the shot. She'll be in Dubai, too!
