bet a bunch on a hunch

I normally don't do hunch bets.

It's not that I'm against "reckless" gambling. I'll sometimes play numbers at the races if I need action, and I don't mind various table games at the casino.

Heck, I've even played a scratch off lottery ticket or two in my day. No, it's just that when I look through a program I'm usually doing so to handicap, and since I'm on a budget, I'd much rather bet the horses I think offer the best value rather than the ones who tickle my funny bone.

That said, I always bet #19 in the Derby since it's the only race I can bet my birthdate, and I'll make another hunch bet Wednesday at Belmont Park when Ed's Princess goes postward in the fifth race not only because the horse shares my first name but because it's my third anniversary, so why not put a fin on the mare?

So, it's #1 Ed's Princess in the fifth and a table for two at Portofino tonight.

2 soothsayers:

  1. My feeling about hunch bets is why I am a terrible bettor: I can't bear getting beaten by an unplayed hunch bet, especially at good odds. If I had resisted the temptation to play Crazy Catlady at 12 - 1 a couple of weeks ago, I'd have kicked myself for days.

    Good luck today!

  2. Ed's Princess ran 5th in that race, some 8.5 lengths behind the winner Wonderwho'sbest.

    You were talking hunch bets?
